iTunes Tip: Keyboard Shortcut for the Search Field

As long as I have been using iTunes on the Mac I have been looking for a keyboard shortcut that puts the cursor in the search field in the upper right corner of the iTunes window. There is absolutely no mention of this shortcut key in the help files or in the menus. Even the official keyboard shortcuts overview for iTunes on Apple’s website does not list it.

After googling for a solution numerous times, trying out lots of key combinations and asking questions on Twitter a couple of times I finally found the answer on a forum:

Command + Option + F

Terrific!

Update January 8th, 2011:
In the Windows version of iTunes, use

CTRL + ALT + F

(Kudos to Stefaan for mentioning this in the comments)

    1. I guess so. Have you tried any combination with CTRL, ALT and/or SHIFT + F?
If you found it, I’d be happy to hear from you and I will update this post.

  1. it bothers me too, yes.
what pisses me of is that i can’t realy have itunes in miniplayer and browse with unique shortcut to exctily one song that comes to my mind to listen without expanding itunes window, or messing with other software shortcuts -.-

all i need is nice pop-up for search song by song, but nothing i found so far

    1. If you are using a Mac, you could use the shortcut key for Spotlight to lookup the song you want to hear. Simply press Command+Spacebar to start searching.

      Hope this helps.

      Kind regards,

  2. By highlighting the 1st and last song of an album, is there a way to highlight all the songs in between?

    1. Yes, there is. Do as follows:
Highlight/Select the first song of an album. Then press one of the Shift keys on your keyboard and keep it pressed while clicking on the last song of the album.
